How to choose the right thigh high socks
Thigh high socks (also called over the knee socks or OTK socks) look simple, but three things decide whether you will love a pair: length, stretch and fabric.
1. Length: over the knee or true thigh high?
"Over the knee" usually means the top sits a few inches above the kneecap, while a true thigh-high reaches mid-thigh. Leg length matters more than shoe size here. Our contrast trim cotton over the knee socks measure about 55 cm from heel to top, a classic over-the-knee fit, while the long knit over the knee socks and striped thigh high socks are around 75 cm for a higher fit on taller legs. If you want the longest option, the extra long thigh high socks are about 35 inches.
2. Stretch and thigh width
A sock that is too tight at the top rolls down; one that is too loose slides. Look for a ribbed or elastic top that stretches but recovers. For curvy legs choose a high-stretch yarn like our plus size over the knee socks, made from extra-stretch velvet yarn. Our sock size chart explains how to measure your thigh.
3. Fabric and warmth
How to wear thigh high socks
Over the knee socks are one of the easiest ways to add warmth and texture to an outfit. A few combinations that always work:
- Skirt + thigh highs + ankle boots: leave a little skin between the hem and the sock for a balanced look. Black or charcoal is the easiest start.
- Sweater dress + cable knit OTK socks + knee-high boots: let the cuff peek above the boot for a cozy winter outfit.
- Shorts over tights + striped thigh highs: a playful look for fall and festivals.
- Loafers or Mary Janes + white or lace thigh highs: a preppy, vintage feel.
- At home: long knit socks with an oversized hoodie are pure comfort.
Prefer something shorter? Our boot socks for women sit at the knee, and leg warmers add warmth without a foot.
How to keep thigh high socks from falling down
- Get the length right. The top should sit on the fuller part of your thigh, not just above the knee joint where the leg is narrowest.
- Choose a ribbed or elastic top that stretches about 20-30% to fit. Too loose slides; too tight rolls.
- Try sock garters or a little body-safe adhesive for long days or dancing.
- Wash them cool and dry them flat so the elastic keeps its strength.
Thigh high socks for every season
In fall and winter, thick knits and wool blends keep legs warm with skirts and boots. Thigh-high searches peak in October, when costume, cozy and back-to-boots outfits meet. In spring switch to cotton, mesh and lace. For the holidays, our red and white pairs are part of the Christmas socks edit.

Colour guide
Black and charcoal are the most versatile thigh high socks: they lengthen the leg and match dark boots and skirts. Gray softens an outfit and works with denim. White and cream look fresh with pastel knits, loafers and preppy pleats. Pink is playful and cozy, and red is the go-to for Christmas and Valentine's Day. Patterned pairs, such as stripes, rainbow stripes and diamond cable knits, are best with plain clothes so the socks stay the focus.
Thigh highs for different leg shapes
Petite? Choose an over-the-knee length of about 55-65 cm so the top doesn't bunch at the thigh. Tall? Go for 75 cm or longer so the cuff still clears the knee. Curvy? Prioritise stretch over length: a yarn that recovers its shape will stay up better than a tight band. Athletic calves? Look for a ribbed leg that stretches evenly from ankle to thigh.
